    I haven’t played Thirty Flights of Loving, so I came to Virginia cold. I found it really interesting and I’m glad I played it, but I wish the narrative held together better. In some ways the game felt like a silent film, and it was a reminder of how just how large a storytelling toolkit is available to game developers. But the effectiveness of the game’s storytelling in the first half is what made the second half disappointing. The hallucinatory ending might have been okay if the game were solely a “Twin Peaks”-style mystery of a town with dark secrets, but I was more interested in the quieter story about racial discrimination within the FBI, and I think that story deserved a more coherent ending.
